āDr Libby Weaver says āThe language you use around food is highly influential. Become really conscious of how you phrase things ā for example saying something is good and something is bad, is not helpful for children and food isn't always that black and white.
āIntroduce the concept of "food as a fuel" ā and the fact that we want to supply our bodies with the best fuel possible. However, there are times for example at birthday parties where you eat 'sometimes' foods.
āChildren are curious creatures, always wanting to know how things work and the āwhyā behind them. Instead of suggesting that they eat something because it is āhealthyā (a word that has no connotation to most three-year-olds), explain the benefit of eating a particular thing.
āEven from a young age, when children start to hear the āso whatā ā the reason the orange is a good choice for them ā they are more likely to eat the food. Link the nutritious food choice to something that they care about, for example, being a good rugby player or dancer.
āChildren who are included in food preparation and the cooking of meals are more likely to get excited about eating what youāve created together. It also provides an excellent opportunity to explain to them the nutritional benefit of each ingredient. This may not work as an āevery dayā strategy since it may not be a quick process but involve them as often as it works for you.
āItās fantastic that you want to share what youāre doing and keep sharing but change cannot be forced on those who donāt wish to change to healthier versions of themselves.Ā But by being healthy in aspects of our own lives we can inspire rather than lecture.
