Gut Bugs and Alcohol ?

😊In the Gym this week we continued our discussion from an article in The PRESS. Dr Emma Beckett a molecular nutritionist & lecturer in Food Science answered questions

to do with Alcohol & Gut Bacteria.


What about alcohol? Is it bad for me? Dr Emma: People obsess over carbs, meat or sugar but they happily ignore evidence that alcohol isn’t great for you. Alcohol is not a health food. If you choose to have it as part of your lifestyle, stick within the health guidelines.


👾I’m worried about my gut bugs – do I have to eat kimchi to help them thrive? Live cultures in fermented foods can be helpful in ensuring a diversity of gut bacteria. But if you’re not eating fibre, too, you’re just throwing any probiotics down there to die. Fibre is more important than Kimchi.

This week we completed our Press-up challenge. Over the month of February I asked all clients to complete 5-10 press-ups Monday to Friday. It was fantastic to hear that most completed this challenge & the amount of press-up they can now all do is a reflection of this effort. March I’ve asked for a give up or add in. We have done this before with great success also. Suggestions are:

Give up: (just for 4 weeks to see a reduction)

😀Chocolate / Lollies

😀Chips

😀Alcohol (some or all of the week)

😀Desert

😀reduced portions

Add in

😘Water

More walking / running / biking

😘a Hill walk


😊I’ve also asked for a 30 second up to one minute prone hold and wall sit for Monday through to Friday for March as well. These are not onerous challenges but give us all a focus.


😊Our quote this week was “You don’t need to be perfect, just be better than you were yesterday” and this is exactly what we should be aiming for!
